When I think about the 30 years I’ve spent in this business, two seemingly contradictory words come to mind: change and consistency. Since my first sales job at a dealership in Honolulu, Hawaii, I have always looked for ways to build on my experience by pursuing new and bigger challenges. What has remained the same is my commitment to our customers virtually all of that time.
I’m a native of Portland, Oregon, but after attending college in Hawaii on the exchange program with Oregon State University, I decided to remain in Hawaii and enter automotive sales. Eventually, I was transferred back to Portland and then Las Vegas, each time with promotion and gaining experience with various makes and models of vehicles. With my family in the Portland area, I returned and married in 1990. It wasn’t long, however, before children entered our life. My wife and I have 3 children. Both girls remain in the area and my son is a Marine and stationed in North Carolina. I continued in retail automotive sales while my wife and I raised our family over the next 10 years. Eventually, I was looking for an opportunity with an organization that had high integrity and was a leader in retail automotive sales. I decided to pursue my strong interest in cars by joining the Ron Tonkin Family of Dealerships over 10 years ago in the pre-owned sales department–almost all of that time with Honda.
It will be no surprise to those familiar with this brand that selling Hondas is the ultimate example of mixing business and pleasure and I knew very quickly where my future lay. Over the next decade, I pursued opportunities with increasing responsibilities and challenges with new technologies. My wife has an opportunity lately in helping acquire pre-owned inventory here and our children seem content.
When I first visited Scott Sidell, General Manager, to learn more about this position, I saw immediately why it has been so successful. As I told my wife that night, “this place is dialed in.” What’s remarkable-and it’s even more evident from the inside-is the fusion of family-owned friendliness and a level of finely-tuned professionalism that truly set this dealership apart.
I’m a very positive person. I try to encourage our sales staff to feel empowered by their individual strengths and to build on those traits to become ever more effective. I’m very supportive-sort of a player’s coach. It’s an approach that seems to resonate with our staff and is consistent with the philosophy of our owners.
In my time away from Tonkin Gresham Honda, I enjoy spending time with my family and taking vacations. I became a private pilot 30 years ago and have recently re-visited flying. My life at this point is a balanced blend of hard work and family time. I consider myself a very fortunate guy.
